About Huá Language Centre

We've been helping Singapore children fall in love with Chinese since 1992 — and some of them are now sending their own children to us.

More Than Three Decades of Making Chinese Click

Huá Language Centre was founded in 1992 by a group of Singaporean Chinese language educators who believed that the way Chinese was being taught in Singapore could be — and should be — better.

They had seen too many children grow up dreading Chinese lessons. Not because Chinese was hard, but because the teaching hadn't caught up with what we now know about how children actually learn.

So they built something different. A programme rooted in Brain Science, Child Psychology, and genuine expertise in the Chinese language itself. One that made learning feel like play — and produced results that surprised even the children themselves.

"Some of our earliest students are now parents. They bring their children to us because they remember what it felt like to actually enjoy Chinese class."

More than 30 years later, the commitment is exactly the same: fun, effective, and built for every child — regardless of background.

The Mind Behind the Curriculum

Mr Chew Wee Kai, Curriculum Director

Curriculum Director & Co-Founder

Mr Chew Wee Kai

Former MOE Specialist Inspector · B.Ed, M.Ed

Mr Chew's passion for the Chinese language is not just academic — it is lifelong. As a former Specialist Inspector for Chinese Language at Singapore's Ministry of Education, he spent years involved in setting national exam papers and served as chief marker for multiple Chinese assessments. That means he doesn't just know the language. He knows exactly how it is tested — and how children can be taught to succeed in it.

His expertise extends well beyond exams. Mr Chew is an active voice in Singapore's Chinese literary community: a columnist for Lianhe Zaobao and Shin Min Daily News, and a member of the Singapore Promote Mandarin Council. He has sat on judging panels for Chinese language competitions and been invited to lead immersion programmes for international students.

At Huá, he channels all of this into a curriculum that is academically rigorous, developmentally appropriate, and genuinely enjoyable for children.

Our Teachers

Every Huá teacher is a native Mandarin speaker, registered with the Ministry of Education, and trained specifically in our curriculum's methodology. But beyond credentials, we hire for warmth — because a child's relationship with their teacher shapes their relationship with the language.

"Our teachers don't just deliver a curriculum. They notice when a child is struggling, they adapt in the moment, and they celebrate progress in ways that build real confidence."

How We Teach: Our Pedagogy

Our approach is not based on instinct or tradition. It is built on research — about how the brain acquires language, how children stay motivated, and what it takes to perform under exam conditions.

Deep Knowledge of the Language — and How It Is Taught

CHINESE LANGUAGE EXPERTISE

Deep Knowledge of the Language — and How It Is Taught

Our curriculum director is not just a teacher — he is a recognised Chinese language authority in Singapore. His deep specialisation in Chinese Language and Literature, combined with decades of experience examining how students respond to different teaching methods, means every lesson at Huá is built on real linguistic insight. We know which concepts students struggle with, why they struggle, and the most effective way to address it.

Teaching the Way the Brain Actually Learns

BRAIN SCIENCE

Teaching the Way the Brain Actually Learns

Understanding how a child's brain processes and retains information changes everything about how you teach. At Huá, we use memory techniques like visual mnemonics, spaced repetition, and pattern recognition to help children absorb vocabulary, Hanyu Pinyin rules, and character stroke order — not through rote drilling, but through techniques that make concepts genuinely stick. The result is learning that lasts well beyond the next test.

When Learning Feels Good, Children Come Back for More

CHILD PSYCHOLOGY

When Learning Feels Good, Children Come Back for More

Motivation is the single biggest predictor of language learning success. A child who enjoys their Chinese class will practise at home, participate in lessons, and build confidence naturally. Our curriculum is deliberately designed to be engaging — with plot twists in stories, language games, upbeat songs with movement, and activities that tap into children's natural curiosity. None of this is at the expense of academic rigour. It is what makes the rigour possible.

We Know What Examiners Look For — Because We Were Examiners

EXAM TECHNIQUES

We Know What Examiners Look For — Because We Were Examiners

There is a difference between knowing Chinese and knowing how to demonstrate that knowledge under exam conditions. Mr Chew's experience setting and marking national exam papers gives Huá an uncommon advantage: we can teach students not just the content, but the strategies and presentation skills that turn a good answer into a top score. From PSLE Chinese composition structure to O-Level oral technique, we embed exam intelligence into every level of our curriculum.
